Emergency Numbers in Portugal

Introduction

Knowing who to contact during an emergency is essential when living in or visiting Portugal. Emergency services are available throughout the country, including ambulance, police, fire and rescue services.

The main emergency number in Portugal is 112.

It is available 24 hours a day and should only be used when there is an immediate danger to life, health, property or public safety.

Emergency Services – 112

Call 112 for urgent emergencies requiring an ambulance, police, fire brigade or rescue service.

The number is free to call from any mobile or landline and is available 24 hours a day throughout Portugal.

When calling, stay calm and clearly explain what has happened, your exact location,  and whether anyone is injured or in immediate danger.

SNS 24 Health Line – 808 24 24 24

Call SNS 24 for health advice, assessment of symptoms and guidance on where to receive medical care.

The service is available 24 hours a day. A healthcare professional will assess your symptoms and advise whether you should remain at home, contact a health centre or attend a hospital.

For a serious or life-threatening emergency, always call 112 instead.

Poison Information Centre – 800 250 250

Contact the Poison Information Centre if someone has swallowed, inhaled or come into contact with a potentially poisonous substance, including medicines, chemicals, cleaning products or plants.

Have the product packaging or label nearby and explain what happened, how much may have been involved, and the person’s age and condition.

For unconsciousness, breathing difficulties or any immediate danger, call 112 instead.

National Social Emergency Line – 144

Call 144 for urgent social emergencies, including homelessness, abandonment, domestic violence, vulnerable children or adults, and people who need immediate social support.

The service is available 24 hours a day throughout Portugal.

For immediate danger, violence in progress or a medical emergency, call 112.

Domestic Violence Support – 800 202 148

This free, confidential and anonymous service provides information and support to people affected by domestic violence. It is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Trained professionals can provide emotional support and information about legal rights, emergency accommodation and local support services.

Anyone unable to speak safely can send a free text message to 3060. For immediate danger, call 112.

Victim Support Line – 116 006

The Victim Support Line provides free and confidential assistance to victims of crime or violence, as well as their families and friends.

APAV can offer emotional support and practical, psychological, legal and social guidance.

The line is available on weekdays from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm. For immediate danger, call 112.

Child and Youth Support Line – 116 111

The Child and Youth Support Line gives children and young people a safe place to talk about problems, ask questions and receive confidential support.

The service can help with bullying, abuse, family difficulties, loneliness or any situation causing distress or concern.

Calls to 116 111 are free. For immediate danger or a life-threatening emergency, call 112.

Missing Children Helpline – 116 000

Call 116 000 to report a missing child, provide information about a sighting or seek support when a child or young person has run away or may be at risk of doing so.

The free service is available 24 hours a day and works with the police, investigation authorities and judicial services. It can also provide psychological, social and legal support to affected families.

When a child is in immediate danger, call 112 as well.

Fire, Police or Ambulance Emergency – 112

Call 112 when you urgently need the fire brigade, police, ambulance or rescue services.

Clearly explain the type of emergency, your exact location, and whether anyone is injured or in danger. Do not end the call until the operator tells you to do so.

The number is free and available 24 hours a day throughout Portugal.
