Connecting Water, Electricity & Internet

Setting up your utilities is one of the final steps before moving into your new home in Portugal. The process is generally simple, and most services can be arranged online, by telephone or in person. Having your Portuguese NIF (tax number), proof of address and identification ready will make the process much easier

                                                             Water

Water is supplied by the local municipality, so your provider will depend on where your property is located. If you are renting, the account may already be active. If you are buying a property, you will normally need to transfer the account into your name before moving in.

Most water connections are completed within a few working days, allowing you to settle into your new home without unnecessary delays.

                                        Electricity

Portugal offers a choice of electricity suppliers, giving you the flexibility to compare prices and select the tariff that best suits your household. If the property is already connected to the national electricity network, the transfer is usually completed within one to three working days.

Changing electricity supplier in Portugal is straightforward and does not interrupt your power supply.

                                        Gas

Some Portuguese homes are connected to the mains gas network, while others use bottled gas. Your estate agent or landlord will be able to advise which system your property uses. If mains gas is available, opening an account is normally a simple process and can often be arranged at the same time as your electricity connection.

                                       Internet & Fibre Broadband

Portugal has excellent fibre broadband coverage throughout most cities, towns and many rural areas. High-speed internet is widely available, making it ideal for working from home, streaming television and keeping in touch with family and friends overseas.

Installation usually takes between one and two weeks, although this can vary depending on your location.

                                      Mobile Phone Services

Mobile coverage across Portugal is excellent, with reliable 4G and 5G networks available throughout most of the country. Whether you choose a monthly contract or a prepaid SIM card, there are plenty of affordable options to suit both residents and newcomers.

Many providers also offer packages that combine mobile services with home broadband and television.
